The Arabian Nights

I composed a score for Theatre Hopkins’ production of Mary Zimmerman’s adaptation of The Arabian Nights. The music is more than incidental music for a play, and less than a full musical or opera. It is somewhere in between. There are songs, dance numbers, underscoring for whole scenes and individual lines.

I wrote this score for a specific production in a community theatre, but a lot of the music would be more at home with performers with more training. I hope to be able to revise and expand the score for a future production in the next few years.

Broadwayworld.com praised the score, saying “Kevin Clark … is responsible for the music and he has a great future.” The Baltimore City Paper said “If the belly dancing doesn’t impress you, the music will.”

The clips below were recorded at a rehearsal leading up to the first production. Anna Meadors, on saxophone, was the only instrumentalist in the entire cast. Kateri Chambers, the lead dancer in the first clip, was also Scheherezade. She also lent the score her baroque flute from time to time. These clips give some flavor of that first production, and where I hope to go with the score in the future.
